I love to grill, Part 2
All day today I’ve been soOo HUNGRY! While reading or driving the car I’d hear sudden noises coming from down below. My stomach was making crazy battle starship noises (hunger growls)! Luckily it I didn’t get to the point of stomach gnaws-they’re so painful. I used to get them all the time when I was little because there was hardly anything to eat. There was this one time…I don’t know if I should get into this story…it might gross people out. I’ll give everyone a little personal story about myself that will somehow explain why I’m getting into nutrition. There was a point in time that I specifically remember about hunger pains, the time I ate a grilled fish with live maggots roaming right inside it as it was cooking.
No one else in my family remembers it, maybe my dad. He came home after being gone for almost an entire day-flat broke. My brother and I were so happy to see him that we ran up to him, hugged him and whined “Pa, Pa, I’m hungry.” I don’t remember the look on his face, but I do remember him saying something nice and calling me his child. I loved hearing him call me by that endearment because it let me know that he truly cared for me. During these moments my anger and frustrations that grew against him would fade away as I knew I’d finally get food in my belly and the unbearable gnawing in my stomach would end. This time, however, as he walked through the door, his walk gave a different message.
Towards the refridgerator my dad ended up, reaching down to grab a small pink bag, then walked over to the kitchen, muttered something to himself I couldn’t make out. The next thing I knew there was a medium sized fish with gray scales on top of a mini grill.
I was overwhelmed with so many emotions that the condition of our meal didn’t matter. All I knew was that my dad was home and that I would have food in my belly. Plus, I was not going to eat alone. What more could a little girl ask for?
Today is one of those days that reminds me how grateful and lucky I am for having real food within reach when my body needs nourishment.
I hope that I haven’t scared anyone away. I’ll move on to better things…food.
LUNCH #1:
Sliced Avocado
Amy’s Organic Beans and rice with cheddar cheese burrito topped with tapatio hot sauce
SNACK:
So Delicious dairy free ice cream vanilla and chocolate drizzled with a chocolate syrup
LUNCH #2:
Side salad: mixed greens, 1/2 a roma tomato, white button mushrooms, along with 2 1/4 pickles
Grilled bread topped with smart balance mayonnaise, grilled Boca burger and a smiley face (I couldn’t resist).
DINNER:
Left over Japanese curry
Grilled baguette slices. I think it’s called bruchetta..? It doesn’t have any toppings, so I’m not sure.
DESSERT:
I sliced up 2 small bananas sprinkled demervera sugar and brown sugar. I also drizzled rum on them before grilling. Once the nice grill marks started to show I flipped them, placed onto a plate and sprinkled with ground cinnamon and powdered sugar.
Very sweet tender bananas.
Grilled bananas!!

AHHH!!! Your grilled fish story creeped me out, haha!! I’m glad to see that your Tuesday was filled with DELICIOUS (not hazardous) foods ;0)

Aw Leng, that’s a really sad story. It is a bit gross, but puts a lot into perspective. It makes me feel like I should be VERY thankful everyday I have enough to eat.
Of course you aren’t scaring anyone away. It’s nice to know more about you, I just feel sad that you had to experience that, that so many of the nation and world’s people have to experience hunger like that. It’s a shame, especially with so many in this country suffering from diseases of excess, that’s almost unheard of in most other parts of the world.
Thank you so much for sharing Leng.
That burger is too cute!
Grilled bananas?!?!?! I want some!

I don’t think your story is gross at all. I think it’s a good story and it helps us all realize how truly lucky we are to be able to afford and eat good wholesome foods every meal of the day. =)

I agree with Romina.. not gross. Sometimes I find myself complaining about something that [in hindsight] is so trivial. Stories like this keep me in check, and remind me that there are a lot worse things in the world than my little “problems”. (I’m not referring to anything in particular.. I’m just sayin
)
Sometimes I think curry is even better the next day. I even like it cold!

I am going to agree with the theme Romina stated. It’s your story, it tell really connected with me. My mother went through a lot of the same things as a child, and it’s amazing how you can speak. And your food for today does look just perfect: healthy and LOVELY, like you deserve!

Wow! Just echoing everything else everyone has said- but thank you for sharing! Hearing about stories like that makes me a lot more grateful for what I have. Thanks Leng! And as always your food looks delish! Especially your pretty ice cream. Though any kind of curry is always sounding delicious to me! Grilled bananas sound good too!
Have a great Thursday!

Perhaps we all have a maggot story once in our lives. One more reason to be a vegan, maybe?
