The Labrador’s Soft Mouth: Myth or Bust

January 8, 2012 3 comments

Man, today went by FAST!

Once I got off work, I went home spent time with the husband, cooked, did 2 videos with the dogs. We tested out the theory of the Labrador’s “soft mouth” with a raw egg (shelled). It took a little longer than we thought, so we didn’t get to go biking. Maybe it was a sign that my foot needs to rest a bit longer.

I spend quite a bit of time training our pups. Particularly our black labrador, Loomis, who recently just got certified as a Therapy dog with San Francisco’s SPCA Animal Assisted Therapy Program.

Because he’s such an awesome dog, I also created a Facebook Fan page. I try to update it as much as possible. Making these videos were super fun and very entertaining and I can’t wait to upload ‘em and share with his fans!

Here are some pictures from our video shoot.

Loomis and I. Love my sweet sweet happy boy.

Everyone who meets him immediately wants to take him home. He’s the ULTIMATE cuddling buddy. During the “experiment” Loomis ended up not liking the egg in his mouth. He took it once from me, but then quickly spitted it back out into the palm of my hands. So cute.

Lulla and I, Love this happy little weasel.

Lulla took the egg quickly and tried to walk off with it. At first I thought she would crush it immediately, but to my surprise, she was quite gentle with it. Looks like she too has a soft mouth. I called her back, she picked it up and ended up dropping it in front of me (as she would a ball). The egg ended up cracking on the ground and she proceeded to lick the oozing egg. Very entertaining.

Earlier today….

Snack:

Trader Joe’s Organic Raspberry Low-fat Yogurt topped with homemade granola. The granola was from Long’s co-worker. She was nice enough to make some for us.

Lunch:

At work today my manager bought us Pizza from Extreme Pizza. He’s also a vegetarian, so we shared a medium. I had two (which is the most slices I am able to handle in one sitting) and he had the rest. I have to say the pizza was pretty darn delicious! The best part–they use real tomatoes not like Little Caesars.

Dinner:

I was going through some blogs for some recipe ideas and came across this Barbecue Seitan recipe from Fat Free Vegan Kitchen. I didn’t have a few of the ingredients, however, with a few substitutions, it still turned out amazingly delicious. I will definitely be making this again. Maybe with a little Asian twist next time. ;-)

My plate:

BBQ seitan, leftover pad see ew from yesterday, cooked greens & a side of quinoa. Very filling and satisfying meal.

Here are some ingredients that went into tonight’s meal.

Trader Joe’s Bold & Smoky Kansas City Style BBQ sauce + a little bit of Sriracha hot sauce = DELISH!

I went to TJ’s looking for Kale, but they didn’t have any, so I bought this blend of greens: mustard, turnip, collards, and spinach.

The Reveal: ACSM Certified Personal Trainer

January 8, 2012 6 comments

So I’ve been saying that I’d reveal info about what I’m studying for. It’s known on the blog (at least I hope so) that I’m going to school to be a registered dietitian. I’ll be done in about a year an a half. Well, along the way I have been making connections that proper health is not only achieved through a healthy diet, but also through a healthy dose of exercise. This is why I am studying to be an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Personal Trainer.

To be honest, I have been thinking about this since last summer! In August I signed up for a 3-day conference (and got CPR certified). I really enjoyed it because it gave me a hands on approach and I was able to meet like minded people. I had planned on taking the exam soon after, however life got in the way.

  • I got accepted into San Francisco State University’s Dietetic Program
  • My husband and I moved
  • I got a job at a pet store (that promotes healthy nutrition for dogs/cats–because I’m just such as well rounded nutritionist ;-) ).
  • My husband got promoted, so that meant his work hours are ALOT longer than usual.

Yeah… a lot has changed (IN A GOOD WAY) since last summer, so studying for my personal trainer certification was set on hold for a bit.

Oh, and not to mention I was my sister’s personal nutritionist and “trainer” for a while. I’m proud to say that almost 50 pounds later, she’s 1.5 pounds from her goal weight!! Woo-hoo! Go Samy! I really have to admit that she’s quite impressive. Her discipline and determination is inspirational. I also really enjoyed our long (and painful) runs together. Samy, when my foot heals, we can start running again until our bones feel like breaking. :-)

Now using my short break in between semesters, I’m studying again. Although I’m learning quite a bit, I don’t feel I know enough just yet. I’m not the type to take an exam and just pass. I’m the type that would study all aspects of something and really get a good grasp of the material. When I feel like I have gained a strong working foundation, I’ll sign up for the exam. This way I’d know that I did all I could to have the best grade I could possibly have. With that said, I’m also using this blog to help me recap some of the information I’m learning. I hope you’ll learn along with me.

Dinner:

Pad See Ew (carrots, broccoli, tofu, rice noodles)

I also had me a bit of TJ’s sparking blueberry soda.

Well, it’s late. I must be getting to bed now.
