ACSM Studying – Coronary Artery Disease & Exercise

January 11, 2012 6 comments

Note to self, when you’re studying don’t do it on your bed, or else you’ll end up taking a 2 hour “nap.”

I had no idea that my body was that tired! Hopefully I won’t be up for the rest of the night. Well, I guess I could use this for more studying time.

______________

American College of Sports Medicine, ACSM, does A LOT of risk stratification, so I have to re-learn (or review) details of the cardiovascular system, pulmonary system (among a million other things).

Through the ACSM textbooks, I’m learning how the preexisting conditions of these systems can be affected by exercise and what I, as an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer (I love writing that), should look out for in order to avoid injuring my client.

Luckily I have a strong background in science or else all of this would be so overwhelming.

One interesting fact that I found mind blowing:

People who have Diabetes Mellitus are 2-4 times more likely to develop Coronary Artery Disease (CAD).

Don’t know what CAD is? I’ll explain here. CAD has 2 categories:

1.) ARTERIOSCLEROSIS:

also known as hardening of the arteries or loss of elasticity in the arteries. Tiny as our arteries (arterioles, capillaries, etc.) are, they do have multiple layers of walls (including muscle) that help to pump blood throughout our system; keeping our body nourished and balanced.

Our arteries serves as a highway for oxygen & nutrients, such as glucose, to be exchanged with our tissues. It also allows for the removal of metabolic byproducts, such as carbon dioxide & lactate. Carbon Dioxide is produced when we breathe and lactate is made when we exercise without oxygen present. If you’re interested, I will be covering the lactate threshold in the near future.

One interesting fact that I learned in my Human Physiology class a few semesters ago is that no one is free from developing arteriosclerosis. Even if you take care of yourself the best way you possibly can day in and day out for the rest of your life, you can’t avoid arteriosclerosis completely. The reason is that we all develop it in our lifetime is that as we age there is a general gradual loss of artery wall elasticity.

The real determining factor behind it’s fatality is to which degree is the arteriosclerosis developed. With that said, it is still very important to keep exercising and eating a healthy and balanced diet.

2.) ATHEROSCLEROSIS:

is a form of the first category, but also an multiple legions within the artery walls. When the walls are damaged, our body’s first instinct is to create a blockage, so that the damaged tissue does not spread to the surrounding arteries. The problem is that this obstruction ends up impeding blood flow and that could be fatal.

The next question you may be asking is “how can we take care of ourselves enough so that we can avoid developing CAD.” The answer to that is through proper diet and exercise.

With exercise the mortality rate of persons with CAD drops.

It does this by lowering the likelihood of a heart attack and it can also help improve the artery wall conditions by decreasing platelet aggregation (what creates blockage at damaged sites).

Dinner:

Last Monday’s Pasta meal along with a salad topped with nutritional yeast, fresh organic carrots, and ranch.

Dessert:

1 Flax Muffin from Flax 4 Life. I tell ya, just like the box says, these are really delicious! I love the wild blueberry flavor and all of the flax in them. And they have a whopping 4620 mg of Omega 3 per muffin. Wowza! The best part, is that they’re only 150 calories per muffin, which makes them the perfect snack.

I paired the Flax muffin with a cup of DECAF Earl Grey Tea (3/4 soy milk & 1/4 water).

Do you know anyone with CAD that has overcame it? How did they do so and are they still keeping up with it?

A Centurion, in the Flesh

January 11, 2012 3 comments

Let’s see how far I’ve gotten today with my long list of things:

  • Dog park
  • Blog
  • Study
  • Pilates
  • Observation visit with SPCA (more on this when I get back)
  • grocery shopping (@ Whole Foods!! EEK!)
  • Create a budget on Google Docs
  • Dishes
  • Dinner

I’m doing pretty good. I have 3 tasks left to do..well, really 5 because I still have to study & walk the dogs. Other than that the rest should be quick and easy to do.

___________

About a month ago my black lab I enrolled the Animal Assisted Therapy program at the SPCA. To complete the program, we had to attend 1 evaluation session, 3 classes, 1 observation visit, & 1 shadow visit.

Today I did the observation visit, so the Shadow visit is the only one left. After that Loomis and I will be able to go out on our own.

Why did we enroll in the program, you ask?

Well, from the moment my husband and I adopted Loomis from Lisa’s Passion for Pets Rescue Group, we knew we had a very special dog.

Here’s a bio I wrote for him explaining why he is so awesome:

Loomis is a 3-year old Black Lab/Border Collie Mix. His birthday is January 26th, 2009. He is friendly and gentle. Likes to greet everyone and have his head rubbed and scratched. He is very bright. Sometimes he learns tricks just by observing. Oftentimes he’ll sit in your lap and will lean his head into your chest to tell you he likes you. On some occasions he will sit your feet to show his affection as well. Toys that work best with him are soft, round and made of fabric, as he is known to swallow tennis balls whole. When he gets excited he will pick up his soft toy and bring it to you, so you can pet and hug him. He really enjoys being hugged. When he’s not snuggling with you, he’ll play“fetch,” when you tell him to, “go get your toy.” When you say, “Bang!” he will “play dead.” Sweet as he is, he is prone to allergies; so an environment that is clean and dust free along with a grain-free diet helps him maintain a soft and shiny black coat. Every person that meets him wants to take him home, especially kids because he has such good listening skills. He has yet to make any visits, so short sessions with one to two people will help him start off on the right paw.

With that much love how can you NOT want to share him?

Shadow Visit:

After studying, I took off to Laguna Honda Hospital. While there, I met Anne, a nurse at the facility. She was our guide for the entire visit.

And I met also Shelley and her Therapy Dog, Hank. Shelley & Hank showed me the ropes to what it takes to be a Handler and a Therapy Dog. Hank is a VERY sweet dog. While at the hospital, the four of us visited the residents. Hank made many of them smile and laugh by performing tricks and being affectionate. I was extremely impressed.

We eventually reached one resident that just blew my mind away. She was sitting at a big table with a few other residents waiting to be served lunch. We brought Hank over to greet her.

She was still able to speak clearly, hear and comprehend what most of what we were saying. Even had a short conversation with Shelley.

While they were conversing Anne informed me that the resident was 105 years old! HOLY COW!

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think I’ll live that long. Then again, I also didn’t think I’d ever meet anyone who was what they call a “Centurion.” I guess you never know.

IMG_0676.jpg

The visit was an hour long, which is very large chunk of time for a dog perform tricks on command, meet new people, get petted, be placed on chairs etc. Like I said, Hank was impressive.

When I left the facility I went to WHOLE FOODS!!! I love this place! they have all of my favorite foods.

Groceries:

  • Salad bin
  • Chobani Yogurt (peach & strawberry)
  • 365 Honey Graham Cracker bears
  • Kettle Brand Jalapeño chips
  • Virgil’s Real Cola

  • Wright’s Liquid Smoke
  • Almond & Sea Salt Dark Chocolate
  • Flax muffins, Wildberry flavor
  • 2 portobello mushrooms
  • Organic carrots
  • Zen Chocolate pudding

Lunch:

When I got home, I was STARVING & thirsty, so I twisted the cap off of Virgil’s Real Cola. REFRESHING!

IMG_0687.jpg

I also made myself a Asiago Bagel Tofurky Sandwich. Also filled with salad greens, mayo, & “bacon.” On the side, I had the Jalapeño chips and 1 juicy and sweet orange.

Do you think you’ll live to be 105? (or past 100 years?). Do you know or have you met anyone who was a Centurion?

What types of things do you do to keep yourself on track when you’ve got a full day ahead of you? Tips or advice?

So glad this super long day is over! My feet are hurting’ n so are my legs. I don’t ‘know if this was from working out on the bike earlier or form work or maybe even a combination of the both. Alls I know is that I hurtin’ real bad.

here’s a quick recap!

Lunch:

Once again a mixture of salad greens, quinoa, bbq seitan, and avocado. The avocado was on it’s last leg. Every time I looked at it, It was telling me to eat it with a salad. Worked out great! No dressing needed here! Iced coffee on the side.

IMG_0650.JPG

Went off to work arrived a few minutes early and snacked on my trail mix of walnuts, dried apricots, dried cranberries, semisweet chips and a few Ferrero Rochers. Hmm Those are good!

IMG_0655.JPG

I had more iced coffee at work. I didn’t finish it all, but took a good amount. Chocolate and coffee goes great together!

IMG_0656.JPG

My Co-worker’s dog, Gor Gor. He’s SO ADORABLE! And the sweetest!

IMG_0659.jpg

He even sits on your lap when you sit down!

IMG_0662.jpg

More snacks at work. I had some of my co-workers Spanakopita. Although not the healthiest, it did hit the spot because I was getting super hungry.

IMG_0663.jpg

When Lunch rolled around, I had some more of the bbq seitan with quinoa.

IMG_0668.jpg

Then when I got home at around 9:15, I had the rest of the bbq seitan with quinoa and seewead. Not very creative…I was too tired to get anything else going.

IMG_0669.JPG

well, I made a cup of miso soup. Didn’t finish it all because I put too much water = no flavor. blah!
