Banh Cheo
In the video above you’ll see how to make Banh Cheo at home. At a length of 12:53, this video has been shortened as much as possible. Making Banh Cheo is very time consuming.
I’ve provided the amount and ingredients below, but to find out how to make it, you’ll have to refer to the video.
Banh Cheo Recipe
Pancake batter:
Dry ingredients:
- 1 Package of Banh Cheo mix (there are many varieties out there).
- ¼ to ½ tsp. of turmeric, in addition to the one that comes with the package
- About 1 stalk of Green onions
Wet Ingredients:
- 12 oz. of water
- 12 oz. of coconut milk*
- 12 oz. of beer**
- 1 TBSP of sugar, optional
Filling:
- 6 cloves of Garlic
- ½ medium Onion
- Reserve on the side for dipping sauce
- 1 cup of Mushrooms
- ½ a package of Morningstar meal starters
- ½ a package of Mock prawns or shrimp***
Dipping Sauce:
- 4-5 Tbsp of Vegetarian fish sauce
- 2-3 Fresh peppers or 1 Tbsp. of chili garlic paste
- 1 tsp. Sugar, optional
- 1-2 Tbsp of Water
- 2 Limes
- Green onions
- Black pepper to taste
Vegetables:
- Lettuce
- Vietnamese mint
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Or any other Asian herbs you can find
*Make sure you do not get coconut milk that has the words, “GATA” on the label. Buy one that either says coconut milk or cream
**I used Heineken, but you can use other beers such as Budweiser. I’ve been advised to not use Corona due to the unpleasant taste.
***Ingredients include: Corn starch, Seaweed, Sugar, salt, Curdlan gum, Artificial colors, Red vegetable seasoning made from corn
