“Chicken” Drumsticks

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

To make the seasoning, heat, on high, the following ingredients in a small sauce pan until it’s gets concentrated. It’ll take about 5-7 minutes.

  • 4 whole garlic cloves
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 4 star anise pods
  • 1 t. of ground nutmeg
  • 1-1/2 T. black peppercorns
  • 1 T. of Chinese 5 spice powder
  • 1 t. cumin
  • 1 t. majoram
  • 1 t. garlic powder
  • 2 t. whole cloves
  • 3/4 cup of soy sauce
  • 1 15 oz. can of vegetable broth
  • 2 packages of “chicken” drumsticks

Meanwhile, take the drumsticks and poke holes throughout, so that the spice mixture can permeate through the meat. I got lazy and used a small knife to cut lines. For a more ascetically pleasing look, use toothpicks instead.

Pour the concentrated mixture all over. Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Remove foil and cook for another 30-40 minutes, flipping them halfway during the cook time.

If you can’t find the drumsticks you can always use another type of mock meat.

a close up on the drumstick. You can see the bits and pieces of spices: garlic, peppercorns, whole cloves, ginger, bay leaf…so flavorful…

Here is the finished product.

Steamed buns goes perfect with the drumsticks
